This term for our inquiry unit we are focusing on the topic of “What’s Unique About Being Australian?” In class Mr, Wegner told us to write ten things that are uniquely Australian. My ten are:
1. The word ” G’day“- A lot of Australians use this word to greet people. It is just short for good day.
2. Frangipanis- A flower mainly found in tropical places, like Queensland.
3. Vegemite- A sweet and sometimes sour (depends how much you eat) spread, that you can put on bread/toast.
4. Koalas- a very cute animal which eats gum leaves from gum trees.
5. INXS (band)- A very famous band which made a lot of money (the original members have now broken up)
6. The fact that we say “outback” rather then country - We say the word outback meaning country-side.
7. Southern cross in the sky- This is uniquely Australian because sometimes when you look up (and south) you can see starts fromed as a southern cross which is also on the Australian flag.
8. The Green and Gold colours- A lot of people wear Green and Gold as they represent the wattle branch and the nature.
9. Wattle branch- It is on our coat of arms and (i think) it is very pretty.
10. Sydney Opera House- It is 35 years old this year and a man called Jorn Utzon, an architect, had thought of the idea whilst he was cutting up an orange and he relaised he could cut the orange into different sizes of a triangle. He t\ahd then created the Sydney Opera House.
If there is anything I have written down that you know is not uniquely Australian please let me know.

HI Coming from Canada some of your top 10 is familiar to me. Frangipanis is new. What are they? If I was to guess I would think they were a type of sweet or yummy to eat.
It is 605 in the morning here and I need to get back to preparing for the day. Thanks for blogging.
G’day Danni16! I am a teacher in Victoria, in Australia. Your 10 unique items are really different and you have put a lot of thought into them!! Well done!
However, when we went to NZ a few years ago, I could not believe all the woollen products that they had, and they promoted themselves as being the most important in the world for wool. I am like you, I thought Australia, rides on the sheep’s back. Actually I live on a farm and we have a lot of sheep. Do you live in a town or in the country?
Hi Danni16. I like the way you’ve thought beyond the usual touristy sorts of answers to things that everyone would be familiar with, like colours and woolly jumpers. Are these things uniquely Australian? Let us know how you go in your research!
best wishes
rose
@Chris Harbeck- Frangipanis aren’t actually food. They are a flower and they are really pretty! (so I think!) They are a tropical flower and they come in pink and white. I first spotted them in Queenland when I went earlier this year and I have loved them ever since! I have made a link to them if you want to know what they look like.
@Murcha- I live in a city and I have seen wooly jumpers before. I sort of knew that in New Zealand there is a lot of sheep but I read somewhere that Australia does actually have more! I wrote wooly jumpers because I am not sure if they (people in New Zealand) actually make and wear wooly jumpers!
@Roseg- Thankyou! So far I have found out that all but wooly jumpers are uniquely Australian. I will try and let you know hoy I am doing later on.
Thankyou all for your comments!!!
(P.S) I got really excited when I found out I had a comment from over seas!!!
Hi Danni from Chardon, Ohio, USA,
I enjoyed your list and the links with explanations!
I have two questions about vegemite. Do you eat it often and do you like it? Is it a spread used mostly by itself or as an addition to complement the taste of other foods?
Best,
Lani
Hey, you have some great ideas and I can’t wait to go to camp and be in your dorm group.

I like your list, its really un-usual (i mean the frangapanies) I also really like the picture that you have at the top. Good work!
Wooly Jumpers… I am guessing those are things to keep you warm in the colder weather? If they are, here in Upstate NY and Canada (Where I am from), we call them Long Johns… not made of wool, though. Wouldn’t that be itchy?
@Lani, I don’t eat vegemite often but it is very nice with butter on toast or on a sandwich. Some people I know eat it by itself but most people think it is too sweet to have plain.
@Stephen Ranson, Yes, wooly jumpers are to keep people worm in the colder months. Some wooly jumpers can be itchy but most of the time they aren’t (if you wear something underneath.) They also come in different colours which I found weird because they are made from sheep’s wool but sheep don’t come in different colours!
Thankyou both for your comments!!!
Hey Danni,
